or-Windows documents how to whitelist certain ip addresses when using CyberGhost (a popular free proxy based vpn). p/1093300 describes problems inserting a HTML image when composing a message when using a vpn. sp.352277/ also discusses split tunneling, and setting up Proxifier to use the VPN purely for Thunderbird. p/1264412 recommends using a split tunnel (a technique of splitting and routing only specific traffic over the VPN network, while letting other traffic directly access the Internet.). ted-to-VPN for how to whitelist gmail servers in order to send a message. Looking for articles/posts about problems using Thunderbird with a vpn, two threads on SUMO pointed to. There are a lot of guides to choosing a VPN, I found most useful. g-history/ explains why I thought it worthwhile to pay for a VPN. The only article they had suggested changing mail server ports or using a different vpn server (which I suspect wouldn't help with the problem I ran into). The support agent I chatted with claims I will not have to repeat that process when I restart my PC and get assigned another ip address, because those are whitelisted ip addresses for the servers. I had to add some permanent security exceptions (which I'm unhappy about), but it seems to be working okay. I worked around the problem by using a web page provided by PureVPN to get a white listed IP address for the gmail servers, and then replaced the server name with that IP address. This was due to the VPN working as expected and they being serious about security. When I launched Thunderbird I immediately got sent a security alert from gmail and outlook which required me to login to their web sites and confirm that I was the person on the other side of the country that had logged in.
